Lavender is one of our most adored essential oils because it works. Just like the flowering tops of the Lavandula angustifolia unravel tendrils of molecules to release their sweet essence, you will feel the unravelling of tension and apprehension upon inhalation of this fundamental essential oil. Our pure, organic Lavender Essential Oil is steam distilled to draw out its natural, calming essence and heavenly scent. Drop a few beads in your bath to melt the day away or dab some oil on your neck and wrists for a calming perfume. This skincare superhero softens and silkifies the appearance of scars, spots, and skin texture.

The use of Lavender as a massage oil dates back to ancient Egypt. Kings were buried with jars filled with lavender, while queens doused themselves in the perfume of this languid aroma. The ancient Greeks anointed their feet and breasts with lavender essential oil's leisurely scent. Lords and ladies of the Medieval English court put a drop of Lavender in their tea to calm a busy mind, and the French have been sweetening their skin with Lavender Essential Oil since the 16th century. Europeans enjoy employing lavender to linens before bed baths; a few drops of Lavender in a steaming hot bath will whisk you away to cloud nine faster than you can say "Ahhhhh."

Question: Is Lavender Essential Oil Estrogenic?

Answer: The concern regarding lavender essential oil's potential estrogenic effects originated from a 2007 in vitro (petri dish) study by Henley that suggested a weak estrogenic action. However, this report faced significant criticism for its methodology and the inability to extrapolate in vitro results to human response, especially given the presence of other unmeasured ingredients in the tested products.

More robust research conducted in 2013, applying lavender oil directly to rat skin (a benchmark testing method called uterotrophic assay), provided crucial clarity. This study used concentrations of 4% and 20%, representing exposure levels 6,000 to 1,000,000 times greater than typical human cosmetic use. This comprehensive research concluded that lavender essential oil exhibited no estrogenic action.

Furthermore, published case studies, while valuable as reports, are not rigorous research due to their lack of control groups, the numerous variables, and the inability to measure exposure or outcomes. These reports often involve individuals using "lavender-fragranced products" (not genuinely pure essential oil), and fail to address critical questions regarding the quality or quantity of lavender, the presence of other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or the influence of plastic containers. A 2019 case study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism even concluded that it is "unknown" whether lavender oil's estrogenic potency (if any) is sufficient to cause such effects.

Supporting these findings, a 2014 study examining oral lavender oil (Silexan) for anxiety found it did not affect the efficacy of hormone-based birth control.

Considering the newest published research indicates lavender essential oil is not estrogenic, its thousands of years of historical use, the robust global market for lavender oil (with billions in annual sales), and remarkably few reported medical issues, we view it as a lovely and soothing option in self-care.

Living Libations offers a classic quintet of captivating Lavender varieties. While every Lavender oil is an enchanting essence, each one possesses distinctive charms, from the serenely soothing to the dreamily floral.

"There's a few things I've learned in life: always throw salt over your left shoulder, keep rosemary by your garden gate, plant lavender for good luck, and fall in love whenever you can."
~ Alice Hoffman, Practical Magic

"...over 1,200 components have been identified in Lavender essential oil. It is intuitively understandable that these layers upon layers of physiological activity of all the components in lavender generate an overall quality, which is distinctly that of Lavender...."
